DEXA Machine Manufacturers Compared
Every major maker of DEXA and bone densitometry equipment — flagships, price tiers, and what service coverage actually looks like in the US.
Two manufacturers lead the DEXA market: Hologic (Horizon series — the US installed-base leader with fan-beam scanning) and GE HealthCare Lunar (Prodigy and iDXA — the research-precision benchmark). A value tier — Osteosys, Norland/Swissray, Medilink/DMS, and Furuno for ultrasound screening — sells capable machines at lower prices with thinner US service networks.
| Manufacturer | HQ | Flagship Models | Segment | Price Tier | US Service Network |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hologic | USA | Horizon A/W/C, Discovery (legacy) | Central | Premium | Extensive (OEM + ISO) |
| GE HealthCare (Lunar) | USA | iDXA, Prodigy, Achilles (QUS) | Central + peripheral | Premium | Extensive (OEM + ISO) |
| Osteosys | South Korea | Dexxum, EXA series | Central + peripheral | Value | Distributor-based |
| Norland (Swissray) | USA | Elite, XR-800 | Central | Value | Moderate |
| Medilink | France | Medix DR, Osteocore | Central | Value | Limited |
| Furuno | Japan | CM-300 (QUS) | Peripheral screening | Screening | Distributor-based |
| DMS Group | France | Stratos series | Central | Value | Limited |
Hologic
The US market leader. The current Horizon line (A, W, C, Ci) is fan-beam throughout, with the strongest body-composition reporting stack in the industry; the legacy Discovery line anchors the used market. Known for image quality, advanced applications (vertebral assessment, atypical femur features), and deep dealer/ISO service coverage. The watch-item on used units is software licensing — body composition is frequently a separate license. Full detail: Hologic DEXA machines.
GE HealthCare (Lunar)
The other half of the duopoly. The Prodigy is the workhorse of clinical densitometry worldwide; the iDXA is the research-precision benchmark, favored by universities and longevity clinics for body composition and visceral fat (CoreScan). enCORE software options are licensed features — the same transfer caution as Hologic applies. The Achilles heel ultrasound unit gives GE the screening tier too. Full detail: GE Lunar DEXA machines.
Osteosys
Korea's densitometry specialist and the most visible value brand in the US. FDA-cleared central (Dexxum) and peripheral (EXA) lines at prices meaningfully below the majors. Service runs through distributors rather than a national OEM network — fine where a good distributor covers your region, a real risk where one doesn't. Used-market resale is thinner than Hologic/GE.
Norland (Swissray)
The longest-running American densitometry name, now under Swissray. Norland machines use pencil-beam scanning — slower but mechanically simple and inexpensive to keep running, with a loyal installed base in research and rural clinical settings. New Elite/XR-800 units undercut the majors; used units are among the cheapest working central DEXAs available.
Medilink & DMS Group
French manufacturers with solid European installed bases (Medix, Osteocore; Stratos). In the US they're niche: competitive hardware pricing but limited service presence, which makes a written support plan the precondition for buying one here.
Furuno
Better known for marine electronics, Furuno builds respected quantitative ultrasound bone screeners (CM-300). No X-ray means no radiation-program overhead — the pragmatic choice for pharmacies and screening events. Screening only; see the portable guide for what QUS can and can't do.
How to Choose
- Clinical bone density? Any FDA-cleared central machine works; choose on local service coverage and price. Hologic/GE if you bill insurance and want zero referral friction with physicians.
- Body composition business? Hologic Horizon or GE iDXA/Prodigy with the body-comp software licensed. This is where the duopoly earns its premium — reporting quality is the product your clients see.
- Research? GE iDXA is the citation-standard instrument; Hologic Horizon A close behind. Match whatever platform your comparison datasets used.
- Tight budget, one site? Osteosys or Norland new, or refurbished Hologic/GE — get a written service plan either way. Compare at DEXA machine costs.
- Parts in 10 years? Hologic and GE model lines enjoy the longest OEM support and the deepest third-party parts market. Value brands depend on their US distributor still being around — ask how long the current one has held the line.
Looking to get a DEXA scan instead of buying a machine? A professional DEXA scan costs $100–$250 (from $99 at many partner clinics), takes about 10 minutes, and requires no referral.

Who makes DEXA machines?
The two market leaders are Hologic (Horizon series) and GE HealthCare Lunar (Prodigy, iDXA). The value and specialty tier includes Osteosys (Korea), Norland/Swissray (US), Medilink and DMS Group (France), and Furuno (Japan, ultrasound bone screening). In the US used market, Hologic and GE units dominate inventory and service coverage.
Hologic vs GE Lunar — which is better?
Both are clinical gold standards; the practical differences are workflow and ecosystem. Hologic Horizon uses fan-beam scanning with strong body-composition reporting; GE Lunar's iDXA is renowned for research-grade precision and its enCORE software. Results are not interchangeable between brands — if you're standardizing across sites or comparing serial scans, stay on one platform. Choose based on local service coverage, software licensing costs, and used-market price.
Are cheap DEXA brands worth it?
Value brands like Osteosys and Norland sell new central units well below Hologic/GE pricing and are FDA-cleared. The trade-offs are thinner US service networks, smaller used-parts markets, and less third-party software familiarity. For a single-site clinic with a solid local service arrangement they can be a rational buy; for multi-site or resale-conscious buyers, the majors hold value better.
